Our sinuses are one of those things that we tend to take for granted until something goes wrong. When everything is working as it should and we are breathing clearly, we tend not to pay too much heed to our nasal passageways or oesophagus and we just leave them to do their thing.

But then spring rolls around and our allergies start to flare up. Or perhaps we contract a cold and we start to feel unwell. Either way, when our sinuses become blocked we know about it. Not only do we start to struggle to breathe and find ourselves constantly coughing, sniffing, sneezing and snorting, but we are also likely to feel immense pressure on our heads and faces leading to headaches and other issues.

So, what can you do about this? What are some natural remedies for sinus pain? Read on and we’ll see how to address this issue so that you can breathe easy once again!

Steam Inhalation


Sinus pains are caused by the production of mucus along with inflammation. The idea of the mucus and phlegm production is to help drive out infections and make us feel better – it’s just that we’re going to struggle like heck in the meantime!

Fortunately, we can counter some of this effect by simply breaking up the mucus and encourage it to flow out. To do this, you can use a steam bowel which will penetrate deep into the sinuses and break up trapped blockages to allow you to breathe normally once again.

First, boil a kettle and then fill a bowl with the water. Now just drape a blanket over the top and perhaps add a couple of drops of essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint. These essential oils will help to further breakup the mucus while also providing a pleasant smell.

Now stay over the bowl with the blanket over your head and breathe in the fumes. You should find that this is one of the best natural remedies of sinus pain and will help to break up the phlegm and mucus while simultaneously relaxing the muscles in the nose and throat in order to provide further relief and comfort. Just make sure that you do not make this too hot or it can otherwise burn the inside of your nose leading to more discomfort!

Warm Compress


Another of the natural remedies for sinus pain that works in a very similar manner is to use a warm compress. Heat can help to not only soothe the pain but also to break up the mucus and help it to move – just like steam inhalation. The benefit of a warm compress is that it is even more soothing and effective as pain relief and that it is also probably more convenient and something that you can use anywhere and without having to make your face and hair soaking wet!


To use a warm compress, you can try creating what is known as a ‘rice sock’. Simply take a clean sock from your drawer and fill it so that it is full but loose with rice. Now tie a knot in the end to seal the rice in and pop it in the microwave on a low setting The rice will retain the heat and now you can press it against the affected area to provide you with relief.


One of the very most important ways to treat a range of sinus complaints is with hydration. By drinking plenty of water, you will be able to dilute the mucus and phlegm in your system in order to make it more liquid and therefore less painful. As a big added benefit, hydrating yourself will also help to fight the cause of the sinus pain – the infection!



Honey is something that you should always keep in your cupboards. This is a fantastic sleeping aid, as well as a brilliant tool for combating hangovers. And as you have probably already guessed, it’s also one of the best natural remedies for sinus pain in both the short term and the long term.

In the short term, honey appears to have some kind of natural antihistamine effect and to therefore be useful for combating inflammation and preventing the immune system from responding too aggressively to allergens.


More interesting is that honey might actually be able to reduce the prominence of your allergic reactions in the long term. That’s because it might provide a useful and natural form of immunotherapy.

Know that your allergic symptoms are not actually caused by the substance that triggers the reaction. In other words, it is not pollen that makes you feel unwell but rather it is your own body that makes you feel unwell (betrayal!).

The symptoms that you associate with allergies actually come from your own body attempting to fight the foreign substance. Your body has mistaken an innocuous element such as pollen as being a dangerous toxin and thus it has ‘overreacted’ by causing inflammation and mucus production.

When you consume honey, you are introducing small trace amounts of pollen into your system via an alternative pathway. This tells the body that it doesn’t need to worry about pollen – it’s harmless – and thus the symptoms of allergies can eventually subside with time.

On top of all that, honey is also naturally soothing for the throat and that makes it ideal for helping you to deal with a cold when you’ve been coughing a lot and you’ve made it red and raw. Honey is both anti-bacterial – meaning that it can combat germs and it is anti-inflammatory meaning that it will help to reduce swelling in the throat in the long term.
