Who doesn’t love a nice snack of munchies and dip? My kids love to dip carrots and celery into ranch, and it’s great on salad or even as a substitute for mayonnaise in a sandwich. I’ve found that for some kids who are reluctant to try new things, cutting whatever it is into bite-sized pieces and serving it with ranch dip or dressing often gives them the little push they need to be adventurous with food. Ranch style dip is also a staple at Summer barbecues and picnics, but the instant packets have some ingredients that are questionable at best! Most of what’s on the market contains preservatives, MSG, and other things that are nearly as hard to pronounce as they are to digest. But there’s a way to make ranch dip that’s as wholesome as it is good for you, and it’s nearly as easy as tearing open a store-bought packet!
I have to admit, I was not expecting to love this recipe as much as I do. I’d tried some organic Greek yogurt dips from the store before, and besides being expensive they were just not as tasty as I had hoped they’d be. I bought them anyway, because I was willing to deal with the expense and the less-than-ranch-y taste in order to feel better about what I was serving my family. But when I ran across this recipe at the Center Cut Cook blog, I figured I may as well try making it from scratch to see if it was possible to find the taste I was looking for using healthy, probiotic Greek yogurt rather than mayo or sour cream. It turns out, I like this dip better than the original! It’s just as savory, just a creamy, but the extra zip that comes from the yogurt really adds something to the flavor. I’ll be making my own ranch from now on, and we won’t feel bad about loading it on fresh vegetables, potatoes, pizza crust, and whatever else comes to mind.
All you need is some organic Greek yogurt (I like to make my own) and some organic dill weed, garlic powder, parsley flakes, chives and onion powder. A quick word about spices…even though you may be using just a sprinkle of spice in your recipe, it’s worth it to go organic! Not only do many bottled spices contain pesticides or GMOs, but many of the spices you can buy in America are also irradiated as part of their processing. I’m no expert, but at the very least I’m pretty sure that the wonderful, naturally healing aspects that are an added bonus of many culinary herbs don’t benefit from being nuked with ionizing radiation. It’s worthwhile to make sure that you cook with organic spices!
Just mix up these simple ingredients and dig in…quick ranch dip, with all natural real food ingredients. If you want dressing, you can add a little raw milk or almond milk to the dip to thin it out…delicious and healthy! Who doesn't love a good snack of some munchies or veggies with some dip - I know my kids love dip! This Greek yogurt ranch dip is a guilt free option! Adapted from this recipe.
