My life used to be a lot more complicated. Take a look at my bathroom fifteen years ago and you would have seen an array of products to help me feel more beautiful. *sigh* Too bad most of that stuff just aggravated my skin and cost me lots of money. No more. Now I enjoy the simple life… at least when it comes to my beauty routine.
And that’s why I LOVE this so-uber-good-for-you and totally all natural facial toner. It’s beyond effective and SO EASY. My kind of beauty recipe.
Why do I need a toner?
Most commercial toners market their ability to absorb excess oils from the face and even out the complexion. But so many of these toners are full of harsh chemicals and fragrances (read: more harsh chemicals) and are often expensive, to boot. In fact, in my experience, many of the toners I tried made my skin look worse.
Because I wash my face either with doing the oil cleansing method (read why it’s so awesome here) or with just plain water, I don’t have the oily problem I used to have when I used commercial washes. That’s because commercial cleansers strip you skin of oil so that your skin produces more oil to try and balance things out. It turns into a vicious cycle. But with the oil cleansing method I noticed a dramatic change in my skins ability to stay cleaner longer.
Apple Cider Vinegar Facial Toner
This is my toner of choice now days. And for good reasons. Just look at the benefits of using Apple Cider Vinegar as a facial toner:
- It helps balance and restore skin’s natural pH and improves overall complexion
- Evens out skin tone
- Lightens sun and age spots
- Dissolves dead skin
- Reduces appearance of pores
- Can help with acne breakouts and scarring
Of course, you need the right kind of Apple Cider Vinegar. Raw, organic, and “with the mother.” You can find it online here. And once you’ve got a bottle there are plenty of other things you can do with apple cider vinegar.
How can it do all these things? Because it’s magical. Okay, not really, but in a world that puts so much emphasis on harsh chemicals to do the job, nature can seem almost magical in its complex simplicity.
If you rather buy instead of make:
Because I get asked all the time, let’s put this here: Check out Beautycounter. You can find their incredible cleansers and toners here.
While the European Union has spent the past two decades banning or restricting more than 1,300 ingredients, the Unites States has banned only 11. Eleven, folks.
What does that mean? It means that there are more than 10,000 chemicals found in personal care and beauty products. Only 10% of those products even have safety data. And some ingredients that we KNOW are bad are still being used in the stuff you use every day.
And you can’t trust labeling. Things like “all natural” and “preservative free” don’t hold a lot of weight in the US. You’ve got to dig deep to really find out what’s in those products you are buying.
Beautycounter is on a mission to get safer cosmetics and products into every home. I fully support their work and their products. Learn more about Beautycounter’s mission here. Seriously, they are superheroes in my book.
DIY Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Facial Toner
2 Tbs. of Apple Cider Vinegar (like this)
4 Tbs. of Distilled Water
*This is a starting point recipe. Feel free to play with the ratio of water to ACV until you find what’s perfect for you. This is a 1:2 ratio (ACV: Water) but if it’s too much for your skin go ahead and add more water.
1. Combine in a bottle. (See, told you it was easy!)
Shake well before each use. Apply using a cotton ball, being careful around the delicate eye area. Wait a few minutes before moisturizing as usual. This can be stored at room temperature and can easily be doubled or tripled.
Note: If you are like me, the smell of apple cider vinegar can be a little… um, unappealing. The smell will go away as it dries, trust me. And you know what? The smell doesn’t bother me too much anymore. I mean, I would want to bottle it as a perfume, but I’ve developed quite the tolerance. Besides, the benefits FAR outweigh the temporary scent.
There you go! Super easy, all natural facial toner!
